Our History & Approach:

Modern Electric was founded in San Francisco by Suzanne Shifflett in 2007 with the express intention of marrying fine art with tattooing. In 2016, the shop moved to the Lorin district of Berkeley under the ownership of Aaron Nassberg, who continues to honor and build upon this founding vision.

The lineage at Modern runs deep through tattoo history, from Aaron to Suzanne, reaching back three additional generations to Phil Sparrow in the 1940s. This generational connection to traditional tattoo culture, informs the shop's pedigree, while embracing contemporary methods and styles.

Artists at Modern have historically maintained fine art practices alongside their tattoo work, creating a rich creative ecosystem where creative freedom is respected, high standards are maintained, and the focus remains on artistic excellence. By joining Modern Electric, you become part of this continuing tattoo tradition that values both historical roots and technical innovation.
