Modern Electric Studio
was founded in San Francisco by Suzanne Shifflett in 2007 with the express intention of marrying fine art with tattooing. In 2016, with the assistance of the UC Berkeley Art Department, the shop moved to the Lorin district of Berkeley under the ownership of Aaron Nassberg, who continues to honor and build upon this founding vision.
Aaron has sought to increase the visibility and function of the Gallery aspect of the studio, while still preserving the queer safe and Feminist aspects of its San Francisco roots.
The lineage at Modern runs deep through tattoo history, from Aaron to Suzanne, reaching back three additional generations to Phil Sparrow in the 1940s. This generational connection to traditional tattoo culture, informs the shop's pedigree, while embracing contemporary methods and styles.
